What is Keto?

 

The recipes in this post qualify as Keto. The Ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet. Keto smoothies usually have some fruit, but incorporate more fat like avocados than regular smoothies. Keto 101

Keto Blackberry Mint + Coconut Smoothie

Layer ingredients closest to the blender blade from most frozen to least frozen. Pour liquids in last.
For one serving
  1. Add 1 cup of frozen blackberries or fresh blackberries with equivalent amount of ice
  2. 5-10 mint leaves
  3. 2 TBSP of shredded coconut
  4. 1 cup of coconut milk
  5. Blend and slurp
Why: Because it tastes so good and blackberries + mint contain potent antioxidants while coconut is a great source of healthy fat. Mint is also an excellent source of vitamin A — a fat soluble vitamin that is important for eye health and night vision.

Strawberry Zucchini + Chia Smoothie

Zucchini in a smoothie? We know, but it's pretty tasty and a deliciously covert way to get a serving of vegetables in especially for picky eaters.
  1. Add 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries
  2. 1 cup of zucchini, raw or frozen
  3. 1 cup of water
  4. Blend and slurrrrp
Why: Once again, we know the antioxidant properties of berries! But, zucchini is the real star in the blender containing Vitamins C and A, potassium, folate and fiber — all helpful in keeping the heart healthy.

Keto Cucumber Smoothie - So Fresh, So Green

Lemon, cucumber and something green makes this smoothie a refreshing summertime treat to have out by the pool.
  1. Add 1 /2 cup of ice
  2. 1 cup of cucumber, sliced
  3. 1 cup of spinach
  4. 2 TBSP of flaxseed or chia seeds
  5. 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice
  6. 1/2 cup of water
  7. Blend and slurp

 

You can also substitute spinach for any other green like kale or even arugula.

Why: This smoothie screams healthy, because it’s so green. With water + the high content of water in cucumbers and citrus juice, this smoothie is an extra hydrating post-workout treat especially if you’re working out in the summer heat.
