Get to Know Our Coaches: Curtis Fellenz
When and how did you get your start in fitness? What drew you to working in fitness?
I started out at a place called Evolution Training in Mountain View, CA while I was still in college. They didn’t have an internship program at the time but were gracious enough to create one for me since I’d approached them about wanting to learn. I was drawn to the variety of clients who trained there.
What drew you to HCI? What were you doing before teaching at HCI?
I met Coach Matt as I was finishing graduate school and HCI was still being built, maybe 7 months before we opened our doors. I was excited about the prospect of working with lots of athletes and taking a sports performance approach towards improving the lives of the non-athletes that we would undoubtedly also train.
What was the first class you taught? What do you teach now?
Learning the ins and outs of the industry outside of the job description itself.
Have you learned any important lessons as an instructor?
It doesn’t matter how much you know if you don’t establish real relationships with your clients or you can’t effectively communicate your knowledge and the why behind what you’re doing.
Any memorable moments in one of your classes?
I’ve got a few clients who I continued to train in their driveways or at the high school during the pandemic shutdown, and we had a good time getting outside of the gym and making the most of what we had to work with.
What is your typical weekly fitness routine?
I play lacrosse on Sundays and I train at least 3 days a week (Monday through Friday). My training consists mostly of weightlifting, with a little bit of circuit work and cardio bouts mixed in. I generally don’t do anything on Saturdays.
What are your fitness goals at the moment?
I’m working towards being ready for a big lacrosse tournament I’m playing in in Lake Tahoe in July!
What are your fitness goals for the future?
I would like to dunk a basketball again.
